TOYS FOR TOTS

The City of Semmes is an official TOYS FOR TOTS collection site! We are helping to collect new, unwrapped toys - just bring the toy to City Hall (we also have a collection box set up @ Century Bank in Semmes).

Deadline set for December 16th by 5:00 PM

"Toys For Tots is a Top-Rated Charity"

Over 97% of your donations goes to our mission of providing toys, books, and other gifts to less fortunate children.
Less than 3% is spent on fundraising and overhead.

The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Please take the time to provide 1 toy for a child who will go without this year. It may mean the world to them. Thank you for your support!

Upcoming in Semmes: The 2014 City of Semmes Christmas Parade! December 13th 10:00 am. Parade will follow the same route as years before; beginning at Wulff Road, turning onto Moffett, ending at Oak Hill Drive.

CHANGES TO THE PARADE THIS YEAR: Barricades will be placed along the parade route from Wulff Road to Firetower to prevent any unsafe traffic and to prevent the children from approaching the ... floats. Safety is our #1 concern.

This year's parade Marshall will be Representative Jack Williams! And Santa will be traveling all the way from the North Pole to surprise the children! (See flyer to the left) Please keep in mind that the City of Semmes is working very hard to be sure that this parade will go over without many obstacles and we hope to improve the tradition each year! Can't wait to see you all there!

Comprehensive Plan
for the City of Semmes, Alabama
Adopted September 30th, 2014
by the Planning Commission
(click on graphic below for link)

This plan has been developed over the last year by
the Comprehensive Plan "Working Group" and Thompson Engineering
from input received from the Semmes Community at local Town Hall Meetings.
The work for the plan was funded by a 50% match grant from the
ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND NATURAL RESOURCES.

The Planning Commission has been made aware of "mis-information" distributed
about our Comprehensive Plan.   Please be advised that the
Comprehensive Plan IS NOT a "zoning ordinance" and does NOT
establish "zoning regulations."   The Comprehensive Plan will in
no way restrict the use or ownership of any parcel of land.

The Comprehensive Plan is just that - a reflection of the desires and aspirations
of our Semmes Community that defines our goals and objectives.
It will be used as a roadmap to guide the
City into the future with all considerations given to the ideas
and suggestions received from the Semmes Community via Town Hall
Meetings that were held.

Only the CITY COUNCIL can adopt a "zoning ordinance" - not the Planning Commission.

CITY OF SEMMES UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES
FUNDING TO FORM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

During the August 5th, 2014 City Council Regular Session, the Council unanimously approved a resolution in the amount of $45,000 funding the start-up of a Chamber of Commerce.   This funding will include building rental, utilities, office equipment & supplies, computer, insurance costs, signage, website costs, etc.

One very important goal of the Semmes Chamber of Commerce will be to grow and promote small, medium and large-sized businesses in the greater Semmes area.  The Chamber will also serve as a resource for businesses providing information, assistance, networking and even educational and training opportunities.  With the majority source of the City’s revenue being sales tax revenue, the Chamber will play an important role in economic development in our area.

Having a good start for our Chamber will help to ensure the success of the organization and ensure the benefits that the City will reap in the future.

“It’s a win-win situation for everyone,” said Mayor Hale.

CITY OF SEMMES RECEIVES ALM
PRESIDENT’S RISK MANAGEMENT AWARD – TOP 5%

The City of Semmes was awarded the President’s Risk Management Award – Top 5% – at  the 2014 Annual Convention of the Alabama League of Municipalities in Mobile.

Approximately 740 public entities participate in one or both of the Alabama League of Municipalities (ALM) sponsored insurance programs which are the Municipal Workers Compensation Fund (MWCF) and the Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation (AMIC).  The Board of Directors of both insurance programs approved the establishment of a Risk Management Award system in 2002.  The award system recognizes those members who have instituted risk management and loss control activities in an effort to reduce their loss ratio.  Rick management and loss control activities not only benefit the member’s loss ratio but also the overall success of the League sponsored insurance programs.  Through the efforts of the City of Semmes, employee, property and liability losses are being minimized; and – most importantly – employees and citizens are reaping the rewards of a safer workplace and community.

Recipients of the President’s Risk Management Award, which included the top 5% of those members with minimal losses for a five year period, received a specially designed memento.  Three additional levels of achievement – Gold, Silver and Bronze – were also recognized.  Recipients in these categories receive a plaque for the first year they are acknowledged and then a plate to be attached to the plaque for subsequent years.  The Gold, Silver and Bronze levels were for loss ratios of below 5%, 5% to 20%; and 20% to 40%, respectively.

The Alabama League of Municipalities was organized in 1935 and has served since that time as the recognized voice of the cities and towns in Alabama.  Through the years, the organization has steadily grown and now serves 450 municipalities.  This voluntary membership brings officials of cities and towns together in fellowship of public service – which strengthens and guides local government in a progressive, responsible fashion.  The primary purpose of the Alabama League of Municipalities is to promote understanding of municipal government and administration in Alabama and thereby advance the welfare of the people of this state.

CITY OF SEMMES AWARDED
TRANSPORTATION ALTERNATIVES PROGRAM (TAP)

GRANT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2014

In April 2014, the City of Semmes applied for a Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) Grant – a Federal Transportation Alternative grant – for sidewalks along US 98 (Moffett Road), McCrary Road and Wulff Road.  This proposed project has an estimated cost of $245,720 and is an 80%/20% grant (not including engineering and design fees) where the TAP grant provides funding for 80% ($196,576) and the City of Semmes provides the remaining 20%.

The City of Semmes was awarded the grant this past week by letter from Governor Robert Bentley.   Sidewalks in this area of Semmes will provide for “walk-ability” for our community from the AHEPA Apartments on McCrary Road south to the Semmes Honor Park on Wulff Road, and east on Moffett Road to Illinois Street.   Other improvements are included such as a safe crossing for Moffett Road.   “This project will enhance the roads, sidewalks and infrastructure in Semmes and encourage safe walking.  Our citizens have been asking for sidewalks and I’m very excited about the City being awarded this grant.  This will improve our overall quality of life by making it safer and more convenient to walk in Semmes,” said Mayor Judith Hale.  The City has future plans to further extend the sidewalks south (Phase II) to the Semmes Heritage Park and the Semmes Boys & Girls Club.

Flag Day - Saturday, June 14th, 2014

You are invited to a Flag Raising Ceremony at
8:00 AM, June 14th at the Semmes Honor Park

Flag Day falls within National Flag Week, a time when Americans reflect on the foundations of the nation’s freedom. The flag of the United States represents freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the country’s ideals since its early days.

During this event, Americans also remember their loyalty to the nation, reaffirm their belief in liberty and justice, and observe the nation’s unity.  Many people in the United States honor this day by displaying the American flag at homes and public buildings.
